Everest Free-Authoring Software
Version 2.0 for Microsoft Windows
ReadMe Notes, January 1997
WHAT IS EVEREST?
Everest is a tool for creating interactive multimedia projects,
especially Computer-Based Training. Everest employs a book and
page metaphor: you build pages visually as you want them to appear
to end users. This is accomplished by dragging and dropping icons
from the Everest Toolset. For complex pages, you can also program
in A-pex3, a Basic-like language. The authoring software lets you
instantly test run what you have created.
End users can play back your projects from diskettes, CD-ROMs, or
via the Internet and intranets (without downloading).
WHAT IS EVEREST FREE-AUTHORING SOFTWARE?
The Everest Free-Authoring Software is NOT a demo, working model
or scaled-back version of our popular authoring software: it's the
real thing. It's a no-risk way to learn how to author. Per the
license agreement, you can create as much as you want at no charge.
We simply ask that if and when you want to begin distributing your
projects, you first call us to license either 1) the Everest
Authoring System, 2) the Everest Suite, or 3) the Everest
Subscription. Any one of these provides the necessary distribution
software and licenses that enable end users to play back your
projects.
BEFORE INSTALLING
Before installing Everest, please read the license agreement found
in the file LICENSE.TXT. Installing the software indicates your
agreement to the terms of the license.
SHARE IT!
Per the license agreement, through the end of 1997, you can make
copies of Everest-Free and give them to your friends/associates at
no charge. This makes Everest-Free ideal for use in classrooms and
educational institutions. Refer to the license agreement for
details. The files you may give to others are listed in the topic
immediately below.
IF YOU DOWNLOADED...
If you downloaded, here is a packing list of the files inside
EV2FREE.ZIP. These are needed to install Everest.
SETUP.EXE
VBRUN300.DLL
COMPPLUS.DLL
README.TXT
LICENSE.TXT
EFREE1.ICZ
EFREE2.ICZ
EFREE2D.ICZ
EFREE3.ICZ
PKUNZIP.EXE
AUTOMATED INSTALL - Requires approx. 16M disk space
To install the software, from within Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 95,
run the SETUP program. This version of Everest is NOT Win95
specific. The SETUP program will not modify any of your
configuration files (such as SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI). The SETUP
program uncompresses the .ICZ files. It also creates a Program
Group within Windows.
MANUAL INSTALL - Requires approx. 16M disk space
If you prefer, you can install Everest manually. Here's how: 1)
Create a new subdirectory (we suggest \EVEREST). 2) Into it, copy
VBRUN300.DLL, COMPPLUS.DLL, LICENSE.TXT and README.TXT. 3) Use
PKUNZIP to uncompress EFREE1.ICZ, EFREE2.ICZ and EFREE2D.ICZ into
it (despite the .ICZ extension, these are actually .ZIP files).
4) Within the \EVEREST directory, create a subdirectory named
SAMPLES. 5) Into this EVEREST\SAMPLES subdirectory, uncompress
EFREE3.ICZ. 6) Finally, use the Windows Program Manager to create
a Program Group and Item that point to the AUTHOR.EXE program.
GETTING STARTED AFTER INSTALLING
In addition to the Everest authoring software, several files
containing documentation were installed. These files have .RTF
extensions, and can be found in the directory in which you
installed Everest.
At minimum, we recommend that you print a paper copy of the
ETCHAP1.RTF file. It contains a 40 (or so) page Quick Start that
will introduce you to the basics in less than one hour. Everest's
documentation files were originally created with Microsoft Word 6,
but any wordprocessor that can load .RTF files should be able to
handle them.
STARTING THE SOFTWARE
To start the authoring software, look for the Everest Authoring
System 2.0 icon or shortcut. Double click on the icon. Or, run
the AUTHOR.EXE program found in the directory in which you
installed Everest.
BEYOND THE QUICK START
The Quick Start covers only the rudimentary basics. To learn more,
consider printing the rest of the Everest Tutorial. Individual
chapters can be found in the ETCHAP2.RTF through ETCHAP7.RTF files.
Also, don't miss EVDG.RTF, which contains the complete Everest
Design Guide (a "how-to" manual).
The full Tutorial contains approximately 150 pages. The Design
Guide contains approximately 250 pages. If you do not wish to
print these documents yourself, consider purchasing already printed
and bound copies from us. Copies of the complete Tutorial, Design
Guide and Technical Reference (on-line help) manuals are available
from Intersystem Concepts for a fee of $39 each (or $99 for a set).
Consult a price list for details.
OTHER HELP
The on-line help documents Everest's objects, attributes and
commands in a technical reference format. To view the on-line help
contents page, after running the AUTHOR program, simply press F1.
Context sensitive help is available via Shift+F1. Also, be sure
to use the "Instructions" button or pull-down menu item found in
various locations.
RUNNING A DEMONSTRATION
An Everest demo has been included in the sample files. To run the
demo from within the AUTHOR program, use the pull-down menus to
choose Run... Start At... and navigate your way to EVEREST\SAMPLES.
In the "Books" column, click on EVDEMO.ESL to open it, then in the
"Pages" column, double click on @start.
Prefer to see Everest's Internet playback capabilities in action?
Run the demo directly from our Web site! Here's how: with your
computer ready to connect to the Internet, in the main Author window,
from the Run menu, choose Start At, click the Direct button, and
enter http://www.insystem.com/evdemo/@start;@start
REGISTERING
Please register by calling us at 410-531-9000; you must be at your
computer and running the Everest software when you call. You must
register if you want to use the software past the end of 1997.
Registration may also entitle you to various special offers
(discounts, free video/media clip CDs, newsletters, etc.) depending
on availability.
DISTRIBUTING YOUR PROJECTS
Before you can distribute your projects to others, you must sign up for
the Everest Authoring System, Suite or Subscription. Presently, a one year
Subscription costs less than half that of any other leading authoring
